How to Style an Open Kitchen Shelf
Open kitchen shelving is a charming little thing, but it can be downright terrifying to expose your “clutter” to the world, Monday through Sunday!
Even so, there are several design advantages to an open kitchen shelf. For one, it makes a kitchen feel less “heavy” and more airy. Plus, they’re ideal for keeping frequently used items handy and easily accessible. And, because kitchens tend to be very utilitarian, an open shelf grants the opportunity to showcase décor that lends a homier feel.
Create the open shelving of your dreams with our three helpful tips—but first, watch this DIY video that we made using our design studio’s own open kitchen shelf. We’ve even included links to all of the products that we used so that you can mimic the look at home or in your office.
ONE: START WITH THE EVERYDAY ESSENTIALS
Your most used items—like drinkware, plate ware and flatware—should be front and center for easy access. Make sure they get the shelf space that they deserve! Depending on your personal style, you can use matching sets or add intrigue with a curated collection of eclectic and mismatched pieces. It’s entirely up to you! My personal preference is a combination of the two: Matching sets within each item category, but varying styles among the different essentials to keep things exciting.
TWO: DISPLAY THOSE DECORATIVE PIECES
Layer in a few ornamental items that you aren’t going to grab as often. Framed art, vases, cookbooks and sculptures can really amplify the personality of your kitchen. Combine larger decorative elements with smaller pieces to help ground your display. This will take up a good amount of shelf space without making it look cluttered. By mixing in decorative items with more functional pieces, you’ll create a stylized yet functional kitchen shelf.
THREE: ADD LIFE!
Flowers, plants, herbs and fruit breathe life into your kitchen. (If you’ve got a black thumb, you can always opt for dry flowers or fake greenery.) I particularly love displaying fruits in a bowl on my open kitchen shelf. It’s a great way to add color and also keeps the shelf functional while freeing up some counter space. Because, really, who doesn’t love a clean and uncluttered kitchen counter?
