How do you create a beauty retail experience that feels open, welcoming, and flexible in just 800 square feet?

That was the challenge behind Freed Beauty, a recently completed beauty boutique in Gilbert, Arizona. Designed for a clean skincare retailer, the project demonstrates how thoughtful interior design can transform a compact footprint into a retail experience that supports both the customer journey and the long-term growth of the business.

For many retailers, a footprint this size can feel limiting. Every square foot competes for attention: retail displays, storage, checkout, product testing, staff operations, and even space for customers to slow down and explore. For Freed Beauty, that also meant carving out a dedicated spot for little ones, giving parents the freedom to shop with intention while their children stayed happily engaged.

The challenge wasn't simply fitting everything in. It was being very intentional about what deserved the space.

Designing for the Way People Shop

Beauty retail is different from many other retail experiences.

Customers don't simply browse a shelf and make a purchase. They compare products, read ingredient lists, test formulas, ask questions, and often spend time discovering what works best for them. The environment has to support that process. Wide, welcoming walkways invite customers to linger as long as they need, while thoughtfully integrated landing surfaces create moments to pause, set products down, compare options, and make informed decisions.

The material palette was chosen with that experience in mind. Warm white oak introduces softness throughout the space, while restrained blue accents echo the calming hues of sky and water, subtly reinforcing the brand's connection to nature and clean beauty. Softly shimmering subway tile reflects light in a way that evokes fresh, healthy skin without becoming overly literal. Together, the materials create an atmosphere that feels fresh, welcoming, and approachable, allowing the products to remain the focus.

Designed for flexibility from the beginning

One of the most important design decisions wasn't what customers immediately see... it was how the space could adapt over time.

At the center of the boutique, a custom display island was designed to separate into two movable pieces. On a typical day, it helps organize circulation and product discovery. During product launches, educational events, or community gatherings, it can be reconfigured to open the floor and accommodate more guests.

Rather than designing for a single moment in time, the space was designed to support the business as it continues to grow.

When Every Detail Has a Job to Do

Working within 800 square feet meant every design decision had to earn its place. In a compact retail environment, every function competes for space, from product displays and testing areas to storage, refrigeration, staff operations, and even a dedicated kid-friendly corner.

The challenge wasn't simply fitting these elements into the floor plan. It was integrating them in a way that preserved the calm, open atmosphere the client envisioned. Behind the simplicity is a significant amount of planning, allowing the boutique to feel effortless for both customers and staff.

A high-gloss fluted feature wall anchors the sink area, introducing texture and depth without overwhelming the material palette. Throughout the boutique, custom handle-free cabinetry reinforces the clean aesthetic while concealing everyday operational needs. Before fabrication, the cabinetry was also prototyped to ensure the drawer system functioned as seamlessly as it looked. A reminder that thoughtful design is often found in the details guests never notice, but experience every time they interact with the space.

Behind the checkout counter, the illuminated double "e" logo extends the brand's presence beyond business hours, creating a welcoming storefront that continues to engage passersby long after the boutique has closed.

The Best Retail Spaces Support the Business Behind Them

A well-designed retail environment should do more than look beautiful on opening day.

It should support how customers naturally shop. It should create opportunities for future events and activations. It should help staff work more efficiently. And it should continue adapting as the business evolves.

Freed Beauty is a reminder that thoughtful design isn't measured by square footage. It's measured by how intentionally a space supports the people who use it and the business it's designed to serve. That's the kind of design that lasts.
